Toys What records did you listen to?
Did you belong to the Children's Record Club of America? Sometimes the labels read Young People's  Records. Arriving monthly in the mail like a book club, these 45's (originally 78's) took the listener on a marvelous of adventure of words and music. We listened to each one so many times they are forever ingrained in my mind, and I can still sing the songs today (though don't ask me what my phone number is). Favorites were Train to the Ranch, Come to the Fair, Slow Joe, Peter Please Its Pancakes, The Carrot Seed, The Four Bears.

Other favorites were Little Golden Books that came with 45s. We loved Hansel and Gretel, with illustrations by Eloise Wilkins, and a narrator that instructed us to turn the page when the birds chirped. I can still hear that voice: "Quick as a flash, Gretel pushed her in and slammed the door. Hansel, we're free," she cried, "The old witch is dead."

Another story with music that stands out, because it scared me to death, was Sparky and the Magic Echo. This was also a cartoon. I've never been able to remember why it was frightening, but now that I've heard it again, I feel justified. Its just creepy (my apologies to Sparky's many fans).
